The 600 F4i is a pretty good starter bike. I'm not sure what year you have, but after Honda came out with the 600rr they made the 600F4i less of a racer. The 600F4i in both styles is still a very powerful bike. One that can quickly get a newbie in to trouble. Honda makes pretty well mannered bikes. They are more forgiving when errors are made. However, I still suggest something with a little less power, like a SV650, Kawasaki 650, etc. These engines are a lil bigger but these are not race bikes. THe engine is bigger but it does not make as much power, nor are the bikes as light as the race 600s.
A beginner should be focused on learning the fundamentals, not flossing, showing off, stunting, none of that. You have to earn that. A beginner needs to focus on learning the skills that will keep him/her safe.
Its easier to learn on a bike that you are not afraid of. Yes many riders have learned on big bikes. However, I have noticed that they also learn slower and often endure more crashes.
And don't forget, formal training is a must. Don't have you boy or your girlfriend's uncle or anyone else teach you. Pay and go to the class. Its an investment in saving your life.

Better Bikes for Beginners (From 2008 - to be updated)
I feel that the SV650/SV650s and the Ninja 500 are the best for beginners.
The Ninja 500 is probably the best as it has a lower ride height enabling most everyone to put both feet on the ground at stops. The non-aggressive seating position is more comfortable and confidence inspiring. It's engine also make a decent amount of power, so once you learn you can still enjoy it.
However the SV looks and handles better. The SV, like the Ninja EX-500 make a good amount of power, so once you learn you can still enjoy it. Most riders will hang on to the SV longer than the Ninja EX-500, as it lacks style.
My first bike was a Katana 600. It makes good power but the problem with this bike is that it is quite heavy (500lbs). If it starts to fall from a bad stop most begginners, unlike myself, will not be able to save it.
250cc engine bikes are GUTLESS, HEATLESS bikes. Once you learn to ride it you'll be ready to throw it away.
