Better Bikes for Beginners (From 2008 - to be updated)

I feel that the SV650/SV650s and the Ninja 500 are the best for beginners.

The Ninja 500 is probably the best as it has a lower ride height enabling most everyone to put both feet on the ground at stops. The non-aggressive seating position is more comfortable and confidence inspiring. It's engine also make a decent amount of power, so once you learn you can still enjoy it.

However the SV looks and handles better. The SV, like the Ninja EX-500 make a good amount of power, so once you learn you can still enjoy it. Most riders will hang on to the SV longer than the Ninja EX-500, as it lacks style.

My first bike was a Katana 600. It makes good power but the problem with this bike is that it is quite heavy (500lbs). If it starts to fall from a bad stop most begginners, unlike myself, will not be able to save it.

250cc engine bikes are GUTLESS, HEATLESS bikes. Once you learn to ride it you'll be ready to throw it away.
